The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has extended its heavy-duty in-use testing (HDIUT) legislation to include particulate (PM) emissions. This legislation requires that manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles run tests with portable emission measurement systems (PEMS) to report emissions under real driving conditions.
Besides legislation, soot and PM emissions are also important factors during engine development e.g. for the creation and validation of the Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) soot loading model. Due to the increasing complexity of exhaust aftertreatment systems, a removal of the DPF and the usage of common measurement devices for this application is not possible anymore requiring alternative solutions.

The AVL M.O.V.E PM PEMS iX meets the toughest emissions standards and is designed around the user. Whatever emission measurement activity you’re undertaking, whether it’s calibration and optimization or validation and verification, it is a valuable measurement device.
Combining the time-resolved photo-acoustic soot measurement principle, which already features in the AVL Micro Soot Sensor product generations, with gravimetric PM measurement, it is highly accurate and offers a low detection limit of 1 µg/m³.
Thanks to the AVL M.O.V.E in-vehicle testing platform the AVL PM PEMS iX is expandable with additional measuring equipment, additional sensors and access to the vehicle CAN bus, making it a complete and integrated solution for PEMS testing.
