> AVL develops battery solutions that can help OEMs achieve a high return on investment. 1 5 F O C U S 3rd Party Batteries AVL Batteries Cost Savings OEM Electrification Truck & Bus at AVL. „This is, firstly, because the pressure to bring such novel solutions to market is relatively low and, secondly, because the charging infrastructure is practically non-existent. Both situations are evolving very rapidly at present, so OEMs will now be increasingly developing specific zero-emission solutions for commercial vehicles. Where battery-powered drive systems for commercial vehicles are concerned, the focus is on development and product costs due to the lower unit costs. Apart from that, it is difficult to find a good balance between vehicle weight, battery capacity, charging duration, range, durability, safety and product costs,“ Schreier added. AVL develops specific battery systems for trucks and buses with a special focus on keeping system costs low without compromising vehicle performance. The module-based solutions deliver cost, weight and installation space benefits and help OEMs substantially in meeting their need to respond flexibly to changing market requirements. Another of AVL‘s major fields of activity in the electrified commercial vehicle sector is the development of electric axle drives, both for trucks and buses. In e-axles, sub-systems such as the electric motor, power electronics, transmission, differential, axle, the lubrication and the cooling system can be integrated without occupying too much space. „Thanks to our modular, scalable solutions, we can provide enhanced system efficiency, improved vehicle packaging, lower weight and, last but not least, reduced product costs,“ Schreier said. Drawing on in-depth system and component expertise, as well as cutting edge development methods, such as the AVL Integrated Open Development Platform, AVL can offer customized electrification solutions that allow swift implementation in series production. „With the aid of model-based development, state-of-the-art simulation tools and global calibration and testing facilities for components, systems and entire vehicles, AVL is capable of developing future-proof electrification solutions together with its customers,“ Walter said. „We support customers across all areas – from product specification and concept development, complete vehicle integration, prototype engineering and production planning to start of production,“ Schreier concluded.  < € „This means that AVL‘s electrification range is designed to satisfy individual (end-) customer specifications in the best possible way without losing sight of economic efficiency. Specifically, this is all about attaining the lowest possible exhaust emission and fuel consumption values at minimum system costs,“ the expert added. AVL assists its customers‘ efforts by offering mild hybrid solutions with integrated starter-generator systems, electrified auxiliaries, as well as electrified waste-heat recovery systems (WHR). One of the key success factors for the optimal functioning of such systems in real-world driving conditions is an optimized operating strategy, into which AVL also integrates various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). WITH SYSTEM KNOW-HOW TO THE ALL-ELECTRIC DRIVE „With regard to the fully electric drive, many OEMs have not yet succeeded in achieving sufficient economic efficiency – neither for the OEM itself nor for the end-customer,“ said Heimo Schreier, Product Line Manager Costs Quantity (Qty.)
