In an effort to reduce global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions, and to ensure low pollution levels, CO2 and noise impact on a regional level resulting from passenger and goods distribution traffic, ever more stringent emission legislations are being adopted worldwide. In addition, local restricted access zones (low to zero emission zones) are being established in urban centers for commercial vehicles equipped with conventional drive systems. This is leading to a rise in the demand for electrified powertrains in trucks and buses. However, in view of the adverse impact which high costs often have on the commercial vehicles‘ efficiency, range, weight and, as a result, profitability, this is not always easy to accomplish in a satisfactory manner.
