F O C U S 1 9 hybrid vehicles or vehicles with internal combustion engines, for example, AVL draws on decades of experience in powertrain development. „AVL uses its expertise to design driver assistance systems with a view to energy efficiency, helping end-customers to achieve significant savings in consumption, CO2 or electric range in hybrid or electric vehicles in real driving. Predictive systems also have benefits in terms of performance, climate comfort or active system control such as chassis systems,“ Erich Ramschak said. An example of successful efficiency enhancing system implementation is provided by German automobile manufacturer Audi. Audi works together with AVL on longitudinal dynamics calibration and develops predictive efficiency assistants for powertrains. In light of the steep rise in complexity in vehicle development and more and more factors, such as big data – i.e. having to secure and handle a tremendous amount of test scenarios and consequently data volumes – as well as the growing demand for more efficiency, AVL constantly optimizes its processes, methods and tools. Erich Ramschak: „AVL offers engineering services and tools to attain the highest driving quality in driver assistance systems and automated driving functions. The achieved added value benefits both our customers and the end-customers, who ultimately also rate this quality in terms of safety perception. This quality feature is reflected in numerous projects all over the world and in our expertise, which we use to support our customers in the development of future-proof driver assistance systems.“  < > AVL supports OEMs in the development of future-proof ADAS/ADF. tions intended to optimize driving attributes such as energy efficiency.“ AVL‘s range of ADAS and AD engineering services covers both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. AVL is additionally capable of defining the requirement specifications on system and component level, including the evaluation of soft- & hardware architectures. For the highest ADAS/AD driving quality – and thus subjective safety perception – to be developed and validated, the company relies on its unique tool AVLDRIVE ™. With the company‘s own vehicle benchmark programs, objective data are obtained on the latest ADAS introduced to the market. „AVL analyzes some 100 to 150 vehicles a year. The data gained this way help to identify, compare and describe best-in-class systems. We determine a broad range of ADAS attributes and break them down into development objectives right from the early stages, during the target setting process. We can even define, test and validate the exact calibration targets for driver assistance systems and automated driving functions – all of which is done with a strict focus on driving quality and perceived safety,“ the expert explained. SIGNIFICANT CO2 REDUCTION AND ENHANCED EFFICIENCY IN REAL DRIVING THANKS TO ADAS Driver assistance systems improve not only driving comfort and safety. They can also help to increase the fuel or energy efficiency, leading to long-term CO2 emission reduction. To develop this type of ADAS for
