Hans-Joachim Schöpf (DaimlerChrysler AG) and his presentation on “Man as the Measure of all Things in Automobile Design - Innovations to ensure driving pleasure and safety”. He stressed that “successful automotive development places man in the middle of all efforts and starts from his demands, requirements and values.” Dr. Karl-Heinz Neumann, President of Bugatti Automobiles S. A. S provided an The “Engine & Environment” conferences in 2002 and 2003 also focused on subjective aspects of the powertrain: “Man as Measure of all Things” and “Vehicles with Character” were the topics of these two events. While the issues were related, the venues were different. In 2003, the AVL conference series was relocated from Graz Congress to Helmut List Hall. The 2002 conference was opened insight into the development of a super sports car. Other presentations dealt with the “development of a brand sound” (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Bernhard, Adam Opel AG) and the “optimization of driveability and sound” (Dr. Peter Schöggl, Dr. Franz Brandl, AVL). Innovations in terms of transmissions were presented by Dr. Robert Fischer (Member of the Management Board of LuK) and Dipl.-Ing. Peter Köpf of ZF Friedrichshafen AG. In 2003, Graz was “Cultural Capital of Europe”. To mark this distinction, the conference reception was held at the “landmark” of the cultural capital, the “Murinsel” island in the river Mur designed by Vito Acconci. Besides the introduction of new methods in the field of engine and transmission application, the 15th AVL conference was dedicated to the system integration of engine, powertrain and vehicle as well as system management. Dipl.-Ing. Klaus Borgmann (BMW Group) spoke about “Implementing powertrain innovations in premium cars”, Rémi Bastien (Vice President, Powertrain Management System and Calibrations Department, Renault S. A.) explained a new method of transient emission optimization for DI diesel engines, Prof. Giovanni Cipolla (Vice President Ferrari GT Powertrain) described the shift of application and calibration tasks to the dynamic engine test bed, and Ken Tanoue (Project General Manager of Toyota Motor Corporation) summarized “Automotive hybrid technology - current and future”. Dr. Robert Fischer (as from September 2003 AVL Executive Vice President Engineering and Technology Powertrain Systems) emphasized in his paper that “only the holistic view of engine and transmission will meet the high demands on quality, convenience, fuel consumption and emissions of future powertrains.” Klaus Borgmann, Rémi Bastien, Ken Tanoue, Eckhart Nitzschke, Jan-Erling Rydquist, Ferit Küçükay
