Dr. Winterkorn also emphasized the importance of consistent data across the entire development process: “If you look further ahead into the future, fast and reliable product development depends to a large extent on consistency and continuity of data, with the aim of taking the data sets from the previous development stage as a basis and adjusting them to the new purpose.” The presentation by Dr. Otto Willenbockel of GM Powertrain was entitled “The powertrain, a differentiator despite globalization and stringent regulations “; Karl- Heinz Kalbfell of BMW illustrated how strong automotive brand characters can be maintained in future despite increasingly strict environmental restrictions. “Vehicle powertrains tailored for market, brand and customer - A key for future success of vehicle manufacturers” was the topic of the lecture given by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger of RWTH Aachen. Adriana Langlois (Magneti Marelli) referred to the contribution made by transmissions in her presentation on “Driving fun, driving comfort and operating costs cut-down – The three facets of ‘Selespeed’”, and Dipl.-Ing. Reinhard Gesenhaus (et. al.) also referred to transmissions in his lecture on “Audi-Multitronic ®”. Dipl.-Psych. Horst Nowak of Sinus Lebensweltforschung GmbH gave the psychologist’s view in his presentation on “Automobile experience between pump-injector engines and fun cars “. 2000 Two years later, the “Engine & Environment” conference focused again on the subjective aspects of the vehicle and/or powertrain. In his introductory address, Dr. Martin Winterkorn of Volkswagen AG described the latest demands on product development in automotive engineering. “To secure sustainable competitiveness, the product development processes need to be designed in such a way that market demands on a new vehicle can be incorporated in product development as closely to series start-up as possible without jeopardizing reliable volume production start.” The vital elements of these processes, according to Winterkorn, are the “virtual and physical data control models and the pilot (pre-series) The landmark of Graz as Cultural Capital of Europe 2003: The “Murinsel”, venue of the evening reception.
