Accelerated Lithium Ion Cell Aging Characterization Using Targeted Pre Aging and Adaptive Current Profiles

Dr. Brennan Campbell
Battery Cell Testing Specialist at AVL

Traditional lithium‑ion cell aging characterization demands long test durations and large sample sets, since each cell must be driven through a complete Design‑of‑Experiments (DOE) aging protocol. This novel approach accelerates this process by combining targeted pre‑aging with dynamically adapted current profiles, reducing test time by roughly 60% and lowering the required number of cells by about 30%. Despite these reductions, the method delivers aging models with accuracy comparable to full‑duration testing. This enables significantly faster generation of reliable aging data, supporting more efficient development of cell designs, pack engineering, and BMS calibration strategies.
