/ 21 REAL LIFE TEST COVERAGE As a result: efficient test preparation and test execution at vehicle level allow to to confirm the integrity of the powertrain control systems and interaction with other vehicle systems even under stress and failure. Critical results can be replicated and investigated in further detail, using the same environment. Solution can be verified quickly and potential side-effects are found early. IS THIS THE AGILE REVOLUTION? It is difficult to underestimate the consequences of this approach: New product development and testing economics are at work here. When the differences between real- and virtual world disappear, when it is possible to switch to and from real and virtual components just by one mouse clicks – the entire economics of how we develop powertrains could be changed. It is now possible to switch from an anticipatory, prescriptive style to a more adaptive style of development. It is possible to switch switch from a process based on the traditional “define-design-build” to one based on continuous adaption: “envision-explore-refine”. Is this the much needed agile revolution in powertrain development? SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK There is not much doubt: Linear thinking, prescriptive processes and standardized practices will be no match for today’s fast evolving, volatile and uncertain vehicle product environment. The approach described in this application is a first step into a direction which could fundamentally alter how new powertrain development could and should be managed.
