Affordable CO2 Reduction THE QUEST FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY The roadmap to greener vehicles is set. Global legislation requires automotive OEM’s to lower fleet CO2 emissions at an annual rate of two to four percent, based on today’s levels. The EU, for instance, will enforce a limit of 95 grams CO2/km, effective in 2021. Discussions on a further reduction to 50 grams CO2/km have already been started. The achievement of those goals translates into significant challenges for the automobile industry. GREEN VEHICLES – AT ANY PRICE? Lowering the carbon footprint of a vehicle fleet in both production and in use, is a demanding task. There is no silver bullet for this. Meeting CO2 targets requires changes of the entire vehicle: lightweight construction, reduction of vehicle sizes and optimization of the whole powertrain. None of these come for free. The electric vehicle has contributed to a step-change in public opinion and as new models have made it on to the road, people have begun to buy into the idea of guilt-free driving. However, these vehicles also share the burden of high costs for battery development and the slow progress of the improvement of specific energy storage capacity. And it seems that the majority of consumers are still not willing to pay a hefty price premium for a green vehicle. In addition, drivers are not willing to make sacrifices on driving range, comfort, safety and drivability for the sake of the environment. That makes the OEM’s task even more difficult to find the right balance between meeting legislative requirements and fulfilling customers’ expectations while keeping cost under control. IMPROVING A CLASSIC Research has shown that there is still significant fuel saving potential in the traditional components of the powertrain – the internal combustion engine, the transmission EU CO2 EMISSION TARGETS AND POSSIBLE FINES CO2 Emission in g CO2 /km Potential fine in € per vehicle Current fleet average Target 2015 Target 2021 Target 2025 136 130 95 75 0 330 3,895 CURRENT CO2 TARGETS FOR EUROPE UNDER DISCUSSION1 7,320 ¹ Note: Calculation based on an EU Fleet average of 136g CO2/km in 2012, official EU guidelines and fines (per December 2013); values for 2025 are based on current proposals of the EU parliament; all values shown are based on a scenario calculation.
