About COMVEC

SAE International’s COMVEC™ is the leading forum where global experts in the on-highway, off-highway, and defense sectors collaborate in a neutral environment to find advanced solutions that will keep CV reliable, sustainable and efficient. The forum will also cover ever-evolving standards to help everyone stay ahead of new regulations.

This year’s event features three executive panel tracks, 15+ technical expert panels, and NEW for 2024, technical paper discussions. Connect with our experts during their sessions or stop by booth #100!

We will be showcasing the latest technologies for PEMS testing, as well as AVL HyTron™--a proven test environment for H2ICE and fuel cell testing. Read more about our participation in the conference programming below.

CV301 Powertrain: Decarbonization of High-Horsepower Powertrains for Marine, Rail, Agricultural and Mining Vehicles Panel
Panelist: Ronald Kruth - Business Field Leader OFF-Road

As the automotive industry finds itself at a crossroads on powertrain and propulsion options to meet future emissions regulations, the demanding duty cycles of off-highway vehicles (agricultural, industrial, marine and rail) make it challenging to develop a silver bullet powertrain solution that provides sufficient power while staying within emissions limits. Powertrain and propulsion diversification is therefore critical to meet the future industry needs, which requires that the industry continue to improve conventional internal combustion engine technology to accommodate alternative fuels such as methanol, ethanol, natural gas, hydrogen and propane, while continuing the development of alternative powertrain technologies such as fuel cells and batteries. This session will feature a diverse panel of speakers focusing on various low-carbon and zero-carbon powertrain and vehicle technologies tailored to off-highway applications. Speakers will cover a wide range of topics including sustainable low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels for high-horsepower powertrains, vehicle electrification and off-highway automation.

CV700 Executive Track: Off-Highway Autonomous Panel
Moderator: Mike Clement - Sr Director Business Development

Offroad autonomy presents a unique set of operational design domains, use cases, and challenges for engineers to address in pursuit of improved productivity, safety and other societal goals. In addition to fundamental autonomy challenges such as perception and path planning, offroad ODDs often include unmapped, complex terrains with limited connectivity/GPS coverage and are susceptible to sensor fouling [panelist can add challenges] - Defense autonomy can include further requirements for GNSS-denied and passive sensors only (vision-only, etc). This panel will review the current status of offroad autonomy and discuss the challenges and engineering solutions being implemented in the Mining/Agriculture/Defense to support further adoption of autonomous technologies.

CV304 Powertrain: IC Engine, Aftertreatment, Hybrids Panel
Panelist: Thomas Howell - Conventional Powertrain Segment Leader

In about 2 years’ time, the Nation’s major Trucking and Powertrain OEMs will be highlighting the new technologies that will be fueled with conventional fuel with dramatically reduced Tail pipe emission. EPA/CARB 2027 brings enormous challenges to the Heavy-Duty Diesel Commercial Vehicle Industry which is already going through significant changes to meet CARB-24 regulations for their Powertrain application. For the MY-2027, HDD applications must meet 0.035g/hp-hr TP NOx, along with lower NOx emission in LLC/ Idle cycles. In addition, new regulations add additional burden on the OEMs to meet longer warranty and regulatory Reliability Targets. These emissions and durability requirements have changed the technological path/ Hybrid approach/ New Aftertreatment system for the industry and also, provided opportunities for the OEMs to meet regulations though different emission credit approaches.  This panel will discuss the steps taken by each OEMs, truck manufacturer, fleets to meet the stringent CARB-2024 and EPA/CARB-2207 Emissions/Requirements – How does the diversification in the Powertrain technology helps in lower the GHG and improve the sustainability targets.

CV800 Executive Track: What will be the Impact of Future Regulations for On-Road and Off-Road Conventional ICE Powertrains Panel
Moderator: Stephan A. Tarnutzer - President, AVL Mobility Technologies, Inc.

On-road and off-road conventional ICE powertrains face significant challenges to meet lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce criteria pollutants. Future regulations for Conventional ICE Powertrain Systems present a great deal of challenges to achieve lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions concurrent with reduced criteria pollutants emissions.

Each OEM will be developing unique strategies to tackle & meet the challenges of criteria pollutant and GHG reduction. This panel will discuss the advances in the future of ICE Powertrain Systems from Engine, Sensors/Actuators, Aftertreatment, Diagnostic and Alternative fuels perspective to address the future regulatory requirements. An additional challenge that the OEM’s and suppliers face is the investment strategy required to meet these stringent standards toward achieving a cleaner environment with sustainable energy resources.
