focus: What does the term “ageing”
mean in relation to batteries?
Schneider: Ageing basically describes
the phenomenon that the performance
of battery cells deteriorate
with time, due to chemical side reactions
– such as electrolyte degradation
in the boundary layers. This
then results in range and residual
value issues for the end consumer.
focus: How can that be prevented?
Schneider: Battery design – specifically
the embedding of the cells –
plays a big role here. Furthermore,
the battery management system
can shift the dynamic load limits,
depending on the risk of ageing in
operation. Our tools can simulate
most of these factors, meaning they
can be predicted virtually in the
development process.

Vehicle and driver-specific predictions
increase users’ confidence in
battery-powered vehicles. The constant
monitoring of the ageing process
during operation allows individual
adjustments to the vehicle’s
battery management system (BMS),
which in turn helps to extend battery
life. It also makes it possible
to determine the residual value of a
battery, with regard to the best time
to replace or recycle it.

AVL Load Matrix™ – Battery Ageing Engineering
OEM Engineering & After Sales
At AVL we have developed an end-to-end method and supporting toolchain for
reliable IoT and OTA updates to meet durability and warranty. The target is to support
the in-field continuation of the development process for electric powertrains.
