AVL E-Motor TS™ NVH

Our commitment to silence.

Noise Vibration Harshness is a key factor in driver satisfaction. We provide dedicated testbeds, systems, and processes to measure, test, calibrate, and ultimately reduce NVH – for a superior, quieter, and more satisfying drive.

nvh testbed

Electrified propulsion systems are a growing part of modern transportation. The changing noise/sound landscape is increasingly demanding modern NVH engineering. At AVL, we have solutions and processes for optimizing the design and quality assurance of interior and exterior vehicle sound. For e-motors, our NVH testing solutions range from high-end, to precision, to efficiency setup – depending on the testing requirements.

As a company, we deliver testing equipment and perform high-tech engineering of single components, powertrains, and complete propulsion systems. We find innovative and user-oriented solutions – depending on our customers’ units under test (UUT). We understand and commit to the strict acoustic standards – and aim to guarantee the commonly agreed NVH targets for the dedicated test system. All components are tuned, and the system is validated by an acceptance analysis.

Specifications

With our NVH test systems for validating e-motors, we support all unit under test (UUT) variants. Our aim is to create development environments that can solve NVH development challenges quickly, efficiently, and sustainably. NVH test systems offer a range of solutions depending on the priorities of the main features, which can be summarized in three main areas across all UUTs:

•    Premium setup

•    Precision setup

•    Efficiency setup

The focus of this test system type is on developing ultra-
silent motors with an acceptable trade-off in terms of the tes-
ting environment. Taking advantage of the unique shape of
the acoustic room, the UUT is placed in the acoustic-free field.
Whilst isolating the load unit and rotating parts acoustically,
the ultra-low background noise level of < 50 dB(A) sets new
standards for acoustic development.

Precision This setup focuses on the on the exact alignment of micro-
phones in the testbedas described in the ISO3745.
The design
allows for a complete microphone hemisphere without inter-
ference surfaces of the mechanical setup.
Efficiency Efficiency is a major topic in the transformation of existing
testbeds. For customers who have invested in an NVH
chamber and/or a component testbed, we have created our
efficiency product line. The focus is on conveniently trans-
forming the testbed into a solution that seeks the best com-
promise between reasonable power and NVH performance.

Premium Setup

Our premium test setup is designed for the development of ultra-silent e-motors, ensuring maximum measurement accuracy in an optimized testing environment. With an ultra-low background noise level of less than 50 dB(A), it provides outstanding signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for reliable Class 1 measurements. The innovative decoupling concept ensures that the UUT remains completely independent of external vibrations, delivering precise and undistorted acoustic data. Additionally, the system offers full power, torque, and speed performance while seamlessly integrating into the AVL toolchain, enabling efficient development and validation processes.

Precision Setup

Our precision test system ensures full compliance with ISO 3745 by enabling an optimized microphone setup for accurate acoustic measurements. The complete microphone hemisphere allows precise detection of single-spot noise phenomena without interference from mechanical surfaces. An innovative decoupling concept ensures that the UUT remains completely independent of external vibrations, delivering reliable and undistorted results. Additionally, the system provides full power, torque, and speed performance while seamlessly integrating into the AVL toolchain for efficient testing and validation.

Efficiency Setup

The efficiency test setup enables a fast and cost-effective upgrade of existing anechoic chambers into high-performance e-motor NVH test systems. Optimized dyno enclosure design minimizes acoustic reflections, ensuring precise measurements. The flexible setup allows easy repositioning of the test system for different UUTs, including e-motors, e-axles, and powertrains. With full power, torque, and speed performance, along with seamless integration into the AVL toolchain, this solution provides the ideal balance between efficiency and NVH performance in modernized testbeds.
