Environment and Climate

Reducing our impact. Strengthening resilience. Advancing technologies.
Environmental Sustainability

Climate change and resource use are among the defining challenges of our time. We address climate change through a structured, science-based approach that aligns environmental responsibility with long-term resilience across our own operations and the solutions we bring to our customers.

Advancing climate action across our business

Climate Action is about translating climate science into concrete action. For AVL, that means reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and our entire value chain, and adapting our business to a changing climate.

Our Transition Plan connects today's emissions profile with a Net-Zero future, translating climate targets into a structured, time-bound pathway aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. At the same time, we prepare for physical and transition-related climate risks. In a dynamic, regulated environment, resilience is as essential as emission reduction.

Climate Action
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy performance across our operations and value chain.

Climate Resilience
Assessing climate-related risks and considering their potential implications for our locations and business activities.

Transition Planning
Developing a Transition Plan to translate our net-zero target 2039 into a structured pathway with initiatives, programs, projects and responsibilities for a monitored process.

Sustainability

AVL’s ambition is to work towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2039*. We prioritize the progressive reduction of emissions and are developing the milestones, measures and monitoring processes required to advance this long-term transformation.

*AVL’s net-zero 2039 ambition describes a long-term transformation pathway. Implementation is subject to technical, structural, regulatory and business-related developments. AVL is progressively defining milestones and action plans to track, document and transparently communicate progress. This statement refers to AVL’s ambition and intended direction, not to a fully achieved current state.

Improving the environmental performance of our operations

Reducing the environmental impact of our operations requires reliable data, local action and continuous improvement. AVL is working to increase transparency around energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and to identify effective measures across its global organization.

Depending on local conditions, measures may include energy efficiency projects for buildings and technical systems, increasing the use of renewable electricity, optimizing testing processes and strengthening environmental management practices.

Energy Efficiency
Improving the energy performance of buildings, technical infrastructure and operational processes.

Renewable Energy
Increasing the use of renewable electricity and evaluating location-specific renewable energy solutions.

Environmental Management
Using management systems, responsibilities and monitoring processes to support continuous improvement.

Using resources more efficiently

Resource efficiency is relevant both to AVL’s operations and to the technologies and solutions we develop. We aim to use materials and energy responsibly, reduce waste and support approaches that consider resource use across the lifecycle.

In our technology portfolio, this includes areas such as battery development and testing, lifecycle-oriented engineering, virtual development and solutions that can help improve the efficiency and durability of products and systems.

AVL is progressively integrating sustainability considerations and eco-design principles into the development of selected technologies and solutions. Where applicable, environmental aspects are evaluated across relevant  lifecycle stages, including, raw material sourcing, production, use and end-of-life. CO₂ emissions, resource efficiency and circularity are increasingly considered alongside technical, quality and economic requirements in development processes. This approach supports the development of technologies and solutions that aim to balance performance, resource efficiency and long-term business value.

Supporting technological transformation through innovation

Technology and innovation are central to AVL’s contribution to future mobility. We support customers in developing, validating and optimizing technologies and solutions for more efficient, lower-emission and increasingly circular mobility and energy systems.

Our engineering, simulation, software and testing capabilities help customers evaluate technology options, improve system performance and consider sustainability across relevant stages of the lifecycle.
