AVL Micro Soot Sensor 2™

The industry standard for transient soot measurement in the exhaust gas of combustion engines.

Video file

As emission legislation and market requirements become more demanding, the task of optimizing combustion and exhaust aftertreatment systems also becomes more and more complex. The soot content of exhaust gas is an important indicator of combustion quality and particle filter performance. Analysis of this metric helps OEMs develop cleaner engines.

The continuous tightening of emission limits under Euro 7 and the focus on real driving emissions (RDE) testing drive increased development for complex exhaust aftertreatment systems.

Euro 7's stricter particulate matter (PM) limits and on-board measurement (OBM) requirements demand precise, real-time soot data.

Soot is a key indicator of combustion quality and a major source of particulate emissions. It is also critical for evaluating diesel and gasoline particulate filters (DPF/GPF) and for validating soot loading models. The AVL Micro Soot Sensor 2 provides continuous, on-board soot concentration measurements essential for meeting Euro 7 OBM standards.

This precision supports effective Euro 7 compliance and advanced emission control development under real driving conditions

Micro Soot Sensor 2

Rugged and Robust

The AVL Micro Soot Sensor 2 is the next generation of the industry-standard device for transient soot measurement designed for on-board vehicle use. Employing the photoacoustic measurement principle, soot mass concentration is measured without cross sensitivities to other exhaust gas components. This one metric is used throughout the whole engine development process across various test environments such as engine testbed, chassis dyno and on the road.

The rugged design, which meets IP34 standards, can tackle the harshest testing conditions at temperatures from -10°C to 45°C and at altitudes up to 5,000 m (with the optional pump unit). With improved system dynamics this advanced soot measurement instrument ensures increased accuracy for the development of filter loading models for DPFs and GPFs.
Beyond automotive applications, the MSS2's proven accuracy and robustness make it a powerful solution for alternative industries such as marine and stationary engine sectors, enabling precise black carbon quantification in line with emerging emission regulations and sustainability goals.
