AVL Introduces Generic Off-Road Automation System: A new level of flexibility and autonomy for off-road vehicles

Autonomous off-road vehicles are transforming industries – from agriculture and forestry to construction and mining. Achieving reliable and cost-efficient automation, however, remains a complex challenge due to different vehicle types, diverse use cases, and demanding environments.

A Modular, Flexible Solution

To tackle these challenges, AVL has developed the Generic Off-Road Automation System – a modular, flexible framework that integrates sensing, planning, control, and vehicle systems into a single solution. The system is designed for easy integration into both existing and new vehicles, supporting any powertrain architecture and any off-road platform, ensuring maximum scalability and adaptability.

Proven Performance in Real-World Testing

The new system has already demonstrated its performance on two test vehicles:

  • Electric tractor prototype: Showcasing the full sensor suite – LiDAR, radar, cameras, GPS/IMU – validating advanced autonomous functions on a fully electric platform.
  • Conventional series tractor retrofit: Showing that autonomy can be added without major structural modifications, highlighting the system’s scalability.

Key Benefits:

  • Seamless integration with new and existing vehicles, independent of powertrain
  • Adaptable across multiple sectors – agriculture, construction, mining
  • Full automation of driving and task execution
  • Reduced development time and costs
  • Fully validated before field deployment

Developed in cooperation with ARTI-Robots, an AVL Creators initiative, the new system accelerates the deployment of autonomous functions and simplifies integration. OEMs benefit from faster development, lower costs, and the flexibility to equip both new vehicles and existing fleets.
