AVL Brake Emission Solutions

Testing solution for the measurement of brake wear emissions

Brake Wear Key Visual

The automotive industry is facing a pivotal shift with the introduction of EURO 7 regulations, which for the first time include strict limits on brake emissions. Recent studies, including AVL’s own testing campaigns and the Inter-Laboratory Study (ILS), reveal that over 60% of current brake
systems are at risk of non-compliance. This poses a serious challenge for OEMs and suppliers.

AVL stands at the forefront of this transformation, offering a complete ecosystem of brake emission testing solutions.

The new Euro 7 legislation, commonly referred to as the Euro 7
standard, was introduced by the EU Commission to further reduce
the environmental impact of vehicles.

The EU has already defined specific limit values for brake abrasion (e.g. 7mg/km for PM 10 for LD). These regulations apply to all vehicle types, including both vehicles with internal combustion engines and full electric vehicles.

Various international test series revealed a broad variation in PM10 emissions, from as low as 6 mg/km to well over 20 mg/km. Therefore, several companies – OEM, Tier 1 and Tier 2 – are at risk of failing the upcoming Euro 7 brake wear emission certification.
AVL Studies and results of the Inter-Laboratory-Study (ILS) have shown alarming results.
