AVL Micro Soot Sensor 2™

Standards beyond limits

The new standard for transient soot measurement in the exhaust gas of combustion engines.

Video file

As emission legislation and market requirements become more demanding, the task of optimizing combustion and exhaust aftertreatment systems also becomes more and more complex. The soot content of exhaust gas is an important indicator of combustion quality and particle filter performance. Analysis of this metric helps OEMs develop cleaner engines.

The continuous lowering of emission limits and the global focus on testing using real driving emissions (RDE) results in increased development effort for highly complex exhaust aftertreatment system layouts. Important tasks such as combustion optimization and exhaust aftertreatment system development require data to be measured with the highest precision. The metric of these development tasks is the soot content of the exhaust gas or on the particle filter, as soot is an important indicator of combustion quality and generally a main contributor to particulate emissions. Therefore, soot is also the key parameter when evaluating the efficiency of a diesel (DPF) or gasoline particle filter (GPF) system, as well as the main measure for the creation and validation of the soot loading model.

MSS2

Rugged and Robust

The AVL Micro Soot Sensor 2 is the next generation of the industry-standard device for transient soot measurement designed for on-board vehicle use. Employing the photoacoustic measurement principle, soot mass concentration is measured without cross sensitivities to other exhaust gas components. This one metric is used throughout the whole engine development process across various test environments such as engine testbed, chassis dyno and on the road.

The rugged design, which meets IP34 standards, can tackle the harshest testing conditions at temperatures from -10°C to 45°C and at altitudes up to 5,000 m (with the optional pump unit). With improved system dynamics this advanced soot measurement instrument ensures increased accuracy for the development of filter loading models for DPFs and GPFs.
