AVL UltraFine Particle Monitor™

Particle Counter for Air Quality and Emission Measurement

The AVL UltraFine Particle Monitor precisely measures ultrafine particle number concentrations in ambient air, fully compliant with the EN 16976 standard. As an ACTRIS-compatible instrument, it supports air quality monitoring networks with reliable performance, fast response, and minimal maintenance.

AVL UFPM

Given the growing evidence of the health impacts of ultrafine particles (UFPs), global guidelines advocate for the expansion of air quality monitoring networks to include UFP measurements. Built on decades of AVL expertise in condensation particle counting (CPC), the AVL UltraFine Particle Monitor (UFPM) provides agencies and researchers with precise ultrafine particle data for defining pollution reduction plans.

In response to global air pollution challenges, as highlighted by the WHO Air Quality Guideline from 2021, and the growing importance of ultrafine particle monitoring, AVL empowers environmental experts with a reliable, precise, and user-friendly solution: the AVL UltraFine Particle Monitor. Built on AVL’s proven CPC technology, it delivers essential insights into the highly impactful world of ultrafine particles. The system supports monitoring frameworks such as ACTRIS and policy implementation under Directive (EU) 2024/2881 on ambient air quality by providing high-quality data.

Engineered for durability and reliable performance, the AVL UltraFine Particle Monitor provides continuous ultrafine particle monitoring, featuring state-of-the-art software for seamless integration into monitoring networks and remote access for easy online as well as locally stored data insights.

The Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) technology detects aerosol particles down to 10 nanometers by enlarging them for optical detection. The aerosol is saturated with n-butanol vapor, and particles act as condensation nuclei as the vapor condenses onto them. The resulting droplets, now large enough to scatter light, are individually detected using a focused laser beam and photodetector system.

High Data Quality, Highest Precision

Our automated drift detection technology continuously monitors for any deviations in system performance, ensuring reliable data quality and high calibration stability.

EN 16976 Compliant.
ACTRIS-Compatible

The UFPM meets standardized procedures for ACTRIS observatories, ensuring high-quality, consistent aerosol in-situ measurements and traceability for scientific research and environmental monitoring.

Consistent Data Flow

UFPM continuously monitors instrument status and key parameters to ensure uninterrupted data flow. In case of disruptions – like power loss or butanol depletion – it autonomously restarts, maintaining consistent long-term performance.

Straight-Forward Serviceability

The unique, patented wick design and user-friendly layout simplify operation and maintenance of the device. All parts are easily accessible, and the wick is exchanged in a minute without any tools.

Proven Reliability at Its Best

Originally built for the automotive industry, the instrument is designed to withstand highly demanding measurement conditions. Its robust optical components are optimized for durability and performance.

Low Butanol Consumption

The working fluid system, featuring integrated ventilation and high-quality components, minimizes butanol consumption and is hermetically sealed to prevent environmental exposure.

Flooding Protection

AVL’s IP-protected technology prevents liquid butanol from reaching sensitive components avoiding contamination and damage. This safeguard is particularly relevant if the inlet is blocked, ensuring reliable measurements and reduced maintenance efforts.

Continuous Data Availability

Advanced software enables remote access, supports multiple interface protocols, and provides easy access to online and locally stored data. Up to two years of data are stored on the instrument as a reliable backup if network connectivity is interrupted.
