Exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are required in almost all road and non-road vehicles today to make sure they meet ever stringent emission requirements.

At AVL, we offer unique, open and scalable simulation solutions for the development, calibration and testing of aftertreatment components and systems. This is complete with consistent modeling of all related physics and chemistry throughout the development process in both office and HiL environments.

To predict drive cycle tailpipe emissions, our aftertreatment models can easily be integrated into vehicle system models. This way, the solution helps to effectively and efficiently develop and integrate aftertreatment devices with maximum performance, robustness and durability, tailored to different vehicles in different markets.


The increased awareness of air pollution caused by the shipping industry has led to the adoption of new regulations, geared to limit the emission of sulfur oxides.

With the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission standards, we decided to utilize our experience in developing, implementing and testing automotive exhaust gas aftertreatment systems to assist the shipping industry. We do this by offering simulation solutions for analyzing and optimizing desulfurization equipment for marine applications.

Fuel Reforming

On-board fuel reforming is a robust, yet affordable solution to lower engine emissions while improving efficiency. Thanks to our vast experience in supporting the testing, development and implementation of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, we can deliver a simulation solution for the analysis and optimization of fuel reforming. This is executed through optimizing design parameters, thermal management and reaction chemistry to improve engine efficiency and to reduce raw emissions.
