- Vehicle System Simulation
- Turbocharging Simulation
At AVL RACING our unique integrated toolchain covers the entire simulation process. From vehicle dynamics simulation to automated data analysis and results visualization, it encompasses the whole system in real time.
You can use AVL VSM (Vehicle Simulation Model) for fully dynamic lap time simulation and optimization, either locally on a PC or in the cloud, greatly amplifying the computing power. In the cloud it is possible to analyze up to 100,000 laps to find the best possible setup for race day. AVL VSM contains comprehensive models of the whole vehicle and the environment. Each parameter can be varied automatically to run big jobs efficiently.
VSM has a world-class dynamic driver model, which is capable of driving at the limit of the vehicle’s capabilities with various car setups.
Standalone or the Full Package
Our toolchain incorporates a range of powerful AVL tools. Each can be used as a standalone solution, or as part of the fully integrated system.
The powertrain module allows you to simulate every conceivable hybrid and electric powertrain configuration. It’s available for PC, on any Hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) testbed, and on the advanced driving simulator. So you can use the same model anywhere without any simplifications.
Powerful Tools for the Best Results
AVL DRIVE™ RACE lets you view data and automate data analysis. This is a must, given the computing power of cloud simulation. DRIVE RACE can handle file formats from common data acquisition systems, enabling decisive comparisons between simulations and real car data.
AVL SIMBOOK™ visualizes the analysis obtained by DRIVE RACE, helping trackside engineers find quick setup solutions. Capable of handling more than 50,000 setups it offers a variety of ways to view data. Vehicle setups can be narrowed and chosen by constraining outputs such as handling or stability for every corner.
AVL KINSOLVER™, is a kinematics tool for racing suspension variants. It evaluates the effect of hardpoint coordinate changes on lap time, driveability and handling. This is done through its integration with the lap time simulation tool VSM.
The AVL RACING toolchain can simulate, manage and analyze your relevant vehicle data. It is designed specifically for your unique racing applications.
AVL has a long history in the creation of simulation tools for automotive development, and these decades of experience deliver value for winning racing teams. Our solution portfolio covers performance aspects from the entire vehicle down to the smallest components, their interactions and interdependencies. AVL BOOST and AVL FIRE are the industry's first choice when reliable results are needed for engine thermodynamics and combustion/emissions development.
Understanding Combustion Events
AVL BOOST offers advanced models that enable engineers to optimize gas exchange, fuel injection, combustion, turbocharging and duct acoustics. Easy to use, functional and powerful, BOOST features an internal solver for chemical reactions that provides species transport for a high level of flexibility regarding fuel composition and working gas. Engineers can switch between 1D and 3D models at any stage of development to enable the accurate prediction of engine performance.
When used in combination with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation tool, AVL FIRE , engineers can simulate – with unmatched accuracy – the behavior of their engines. FIRE is designed for the prediction of all relevant physics and chemistry within the engine.
Tailored to the needs of engineers, FIRE’s analysis of fuel injection, air/fuel mixture, ignition, combustion, knock, emission formation and heat transfer, is dynamic and predictive.
Automated pre-processing computational models can be generated easily, even those which include moving parts such as pistons, valves, shafts and gears.
As a vital part of the development toolchain, FIRE and BOOST enable teams to optimize their vehicles at the highest level of detail. From fuel chemistry to cross-domain thermodynamics, these tools offer engine refinement to an unprecedented degree.
Weight reduction is the holy grail for racing teams. Packing as much power into the lightest vehicle possible can mean the difference between a place on the podium and being late to the finish.
But weight savings for ever-lighter components can also often lead to strength and durability reduction. Therefore, it is vital to find the perfect combination. With our simulation experience and toolchain, we help motorsport teams get this balance right.
The Right Tool for the Job
AVL EXCITE™ is our powertrain-oriented solution for strength and durability analysis. It works at a variety of modelling depths, offering unmatched fidelity and enabling the optimum relationship between simulation effort and accuracy throughout the development process.
With its detailed models you can see how structures and components behave, and how they influence each other. Best-in-business elasto-hydrodynamic models of lubricated contacts, such as slider bearings, pistons and piston rings, enable investigations into their behavior as well as friction and wear.
A Flexible Solution for Robust Results
EXCITE achieves the best possible computational efficiency with a strong numerical coupling between structural dynamics and elasto-hydrodynamics. Even torsional and radial electro-mechanical coupling can be considered, making it the perfect tool for hybrid powertrains and e-drives, which are increasingly impacting motorsports.
Application-specific pre and post-processing tools and workflows, such as numerical transfer path analysis and airborne noise calculations for acoustic investigations are available as features too. From start to finish, EXCITE helps racing teams to easily optimize their components and minimize friction to obtain the maximum performance from the lightest package.
AVL CRUISE™ M is a multi-disciplinary vehicle system simulation tool. It can be used both in the office or in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) environments from concept analysis to control function development.
CRUISE M enables the modeling of the driveline, electric network and control strategies, and shows their impact upon energy consumption. Different physical domains can be modeled in detail, including thermodynamics, mechanical and chemical systems, flow and electric.
This level of detail gives engineers valuable insights that aid the design and optimization of a variety of sub-systems and processes. These include engine gas exchange, combustion, and cooling circuits, as well as hydraulic and pneumatic networks.
As Flexible as it is Powerful
From powertrain concept definition through to a wide range of vehicle system simulation applications, CRUISE M delivers value in a variety of ways. Systems and applications include:
- Powertrain concept and energy management analysis
- Engine-related vehicle system simulation
- Transmission-related vehicle system simulation
- E-drive and battery-related vehicle system simulation
- Control unit-related vehicle system simulation
CRUISE M has a wide range of features that are invaluable in system simulation. It can be used in the benchmarking and concept assessment of different powertrain architectures, detailed analysis of energy flow between power source and vehicle motion. The modelling of advanced transmission configurations, control unit assessment and optimization, and energy consumption can all be thoroughly investigated, too.
Powertrain Simulation on the Testbed
One of the key benefits of CRUISE M is that office models can be used as plant models on engine, powertrain and chassis dyno testbeds. This is perfect for controller validation and component testing.
The approach encapsulated in CRUISE M is applicable over the entire engineering process and works in combination with third-party tools. This enables integration into your existing development environment.
Turbocharging enables racing teams to increase the output of their powertrains without increasing weight or size simultaneously. Our simulation tools ensure that the optimum performance is achieved and that the turbocharger doesn’t have a negative impact on other vehicle or powertrain systems. A combination of AVL BOOST™, AVL EXCITE™ and AVL FIRE™ M can be used to help create pressure charging systems that are powerful yet durable. The toolchain enables the investigation of critical behavior before any hardware is built.
Power, Precision, Performance
Maximum performance isn’t just about the application of maximum power. It’s about ensuring that power is applied precisely, at the right time to obtain optimal benefit. And that’s what these tools enable racing teams to do. Together, they allow engineers to:
- Aerodynamically develop and optimize turbine and compressor wheels for highly efficient charging devices
- Design new turbochargers with engine matching at every design step
- Change compressor and turbine sizes and predict the effect of these changes
- Ensure best NVH behavior and maximum durability
Our three dynamic simulation tools can be used in different ways in the development of superlative superchargers. Each one brings a different type of modeling to the workflow.
