The technical mathematician Michaela Unterweger works as a Senior Data Analyst at AVL in Graz – she combines cutting-edge mathematical models with practical applications.
No project is like another, and you constantly have to reorient yourself. You’re always learning something new. That’s one of the biggest challenges, but also the best part of my job.
When Michaela Unterweger talks about her daily work, it becomes clear: it’s not just about numbers, but about the future. Her goal: to make a valuable contribution to research, development, and innovation in the mobility sector.
Theory and Practice
Even in school, the Carinthian native was fascinated by mathematics, "because there is always a clear solution." After studying technical mathematics in Graz and working for three years as an actuary in Vienna, she returned to Graz and joined AVL after a friend drew her attention to the company.
A major thematic shift? Not really, says Michaela, “because the statistical and mathematical methods are very similar in both areas.”
At AVL, Michaela works as a Senior Data Analyst in the Test Data Preparation & Analysis department. The team is responsible for organizing, analyzing, and enriching test data from various test and measurement systems:
“We prepare test bench and vehicle data for AI-supported analysis by enriching it with metadata, checking data quality, and centrally storing it in appropriate formats,” explains the expert, giving insight into her tasks.
At the interface between theory and practice, her team also assesses the impact of production tolerances, component aging, or different usage patterns on specific development target parameters such as system performance or emissions.
Driven by Innovation
Her work is not only driven by innovation – it is also interdisciplinary and varied, because “no project is like another, and you constantly have to reorient yourself. You’re always learning something new. That’s one of the biggest challenges, but also the best part of my job.”
Workshops with customers are also part of Michaela’s responsibilities – for instance, when it comes to explaining her methods so they can be applied in practice.
What does she value most about AVL? “That you can contribute your own ideas – and that the work has an impact. Also, that I don’t just work on customer projects and that there is a lot of space for research and development. In addition, many different departments are involved in a single project, which leads to exciting exchanges.”
A truly meaningful role for future-oriented talents.
