14th International AVL Symposium on Propulsion Diagnostics


Ladies and Gentlemen,

The lucky number 13 was the start of the Propulsion Diagnostics Symposium in 2018, with which we - recognizing the signs of the times - successfully extended the topic of metrological challenges from combustion in combustion engines to the entire powertrain. The 14th International AVL Propulsion Diagnostics Symposium is scheduled for June 2020.

"What has changed recently? Have our industry’s priorities shifted?" These are questions that concern us all. We can see that the development activities around the electrified powertrain have been intensified. This applies both to all-electric drives and hybrid powertrains. That said, the prevalence of hybrids ensures the continues importance of the combustion engine as a propulsion source in the coming years; so that development will continue here as well.

In addition to the technical issues relating to the new powertrains, we must not ignore the infrastructure. Customers want to know how quickly and comfortably they can "refuel" with electricity, for example, or where the nearest hydrogen filling station is located.

But what do these changes mean for our Propulsion Diagnostics Symposium?

Does everything have to be optimized at the same time?

In the past, only combustion was measured, analyzed and improved; today, the effects on noise and emissions must be addressed at the same time. Does it make sense to optimize the electric propulsion system at the same time as the combustion engine? Has the importance of time as a factor in development increased further? What effects does this have on measurement technology?

To limit the breadth of these many questions somewhat, we have agreed on a number of current topics in the Program Advisory Board, which give us the opportunity to discuss these topics on the basis of technical questions:

  • Combustion Diagnostics
  • Visualization / Simulation of Dynamic Processes
  • Emissions – Generation and Avoidance
  • Electrified Powertrain
  • Hydrogen / Fuel Cell
  • Onboard Monitoring and Diagnostics
  • Noise, Vibration & Harshness

At this symposium, we are providing an ideal platform with lectures and an intensive dialogue between experts and users to discuss these burning issues and promote the transfer of knowledge. We would like to present not only excellent technical solutions on a modern powertrain, but also the metrological challenges. The focus will be on the "why and how" in the developments.

The efficiency of the gasoline engine, for example, is to be massively increased and this will become possible if its operating range is changed by a suitable electric motor application. Or in the inverter, the switching frequency is constantly increased to achieve higher efficiencies of the electric propulsion. Many of these changes in the powertrain lead to additional measurement requirements that must be met to understand details. Only then can the overall system be optimized - usually supported by simulation - since the interactions between mature individual components can be understood and evaluated.

The conference addresses not only combustion developers of all engine sizes, but also transmission, electric motor, inverter, battery, mechanics developers and calibration engineers.

Application criteria and selection process:
Subsidized places are applicable for Bachelor and Master students focusing on the topics of vehicle engineering, combustion engines or comparable subjects.

Applications should contain a CV, a motivation letter, an overview about your methodology projects, a confirmation of matriculation as well as certificates of completed examinations. If applications are on a par, further selection will be based on a “first-come, first-served” principle.

All submitted applications will be evaluated by the program committee. By submitting applications, students agree to these rules and eligibility requirements, especially that AVL may forward submitted documents to the organizations mentioned above. Any recourse to courts of law is excluded.

Closing date for submission of application is April 17th, 2020.
