Power Electronics for the Electric Driveline

AVL develops power electronics and software for electric drives, from prototype to series production. Services include hardware and software development, functional safety, cybersecurity, EMC, testing, validation and industrialization.

We work with proven power electronics technologies as well as SiC and GaN semiconductor solutions.

AVL's Power Electronic Development with GaN Power Modules

Power electronics and software engineering covers the electric driveline from individual components to integrated systems.

This includes inverters, DC/DC converters and on-board chargers as standalone components or highly integrated X-in-One systems for efficient, production-ready e-drives.

Electric drives are expected to deliver more performance while reducing overall cost. This puts growing pressure on power electronics: inverters, DC/DC converters and on-board chargers need to become more efficient without losing sight of packaging, development time or manufacturability.

For OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, a strong prototype is not enough. What matters is a development path that is designed for industrialization from an early stage. This includes Design-to-X, ASPICE-compliant software development, vertical integration, secured supply chains and clear IP ownership.

Customers need to develop power electronics faster and closer to series production. AVL supports them with innovations in virtualization, simulation, hardware and software development, and technology expertise through to industrialization. This allows concepts to be validated early, development risks to be reduced, and solutions to be prepared for high-volume production.

These innovation areas range from SiC (Silicon Carbide)- and GaN (Gallium Nitride)-based power semiconductors and new topologies such as multilevel and single-stage concepts to next-generation microcontrollers, optimized cooling, and software-based efficiency improvements through optimized PWM and switching patterns. Together with partners such as Jabil, AVL enables short development paths that can also support customers in building their own in-house production capabilities for high volumes if required.

AVL helps customers move advanced power electronics toward series production faster and with less risk. The focus is on technologies that enable high efficiency, compact integration and scalable manufacturing.

Faster Route to a Production-Ready Solution

With pre-developed inverter and DC/DC platforms, customers move into implementation faster. GaN, SiC and multilevel concepts can be aligned with the specific application early in the process.

AI-Driven Product Development

AVL shortens the path to series production through AI, digital engineering methods and agile project structures. Reusable platforms, virtual validation and a strong partner ecosystem reduce effort and accelerate the industrialization of new technologies.

Lower Risk for Advanced Power Electronics

In GaN, SiC and multilevel concepts, details in switching behavior often determine efficiency, EMC and thermal stability. Simulation and early testing help make critical effects visible before they lead to costly hardware loops.

Validated in Real-World Vehicle Applications

New technologies must prove themselves beyond simulation. AVL integrates its innovations into demonstrator vehicles at an early stage, generating valuable insights that help accelerate the path to series production.

More Flexibility in Scaling and Manufacturing

AVL supports the path from development to higher production volumes. With manufacturing partners such as Jabil, flexible production models are possible, from external manufacturing to customer-owned in-house production.

Development of Battery Management Systems, Inverters and Charging Systems for Hybrid, Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles

Battery management systems, inverters, DC/DC converters and charging systems play a critical role in determining the range, efficiency and operational reliability of electrified vehicles. AVL develops these components for hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell vehicles and supports customers in adapting them to specific vehicle requirements.

The resulting solutions are tailored to the required power and voltage architecture and can be seamlessly integrated into existing vehicle platforms. In addition to hardware development, AVL also develops the associated embedded software and ensures the validation of functions and interfaces at both component and system level.

Engineering Proven on the Road

Behind every electrified powertrain is the interaction of high-performance components. From battery management systems and inverters to e-motors and complete e-axles, AVL covers the key building blocks of modern electric propulsion systems.
