Due to legal requirements, the additional costs OEMs face when performing emissions-relevant tests on the road and on chassis dynos have increased considerably.
In order to make things easier, road tests can also be carried out in testbed environments. However, there are several factors that must be considered if this is to be successfully implemented:
  • For the relocation of emissions-relevant tests in testbed environments, appropriate vehicle and driver models are required; and especially for engine testbeds, suitable transmission models are necessary
  • The methodology used on the testbed is also decisive; it is the only way to ensure high measurement quality
  • Nevertheless, road tests must not be forgotten. Preparation (e.g. selection of the best route), execution (assistance systems that support the driver with regard to dynamic criteria) and post-processing (preparation of the measurement data for transfer to a testbed environment) require appropriate tools
Christian Mayr, Project Manager for the Integrated and Open Development Platform discusses how emissions-relevant driving cycles can be executed on testbeds and – as an example – shows results from a customer project involving chassis dyno and engine testbeds.

Legislation is pushing automotive propulsion engineers to apply advanced transmission and drivetrain technology while striving towards improving efficiency. The required measures are often negatively impacting the vehicle’s NVH behavior. As legislation is also demanding reduced noise levels, NVH is becoming an integral task in powertrain and transmission development. Disturbingly high noise and vibration levels are emissions and are to be avoided or reduced, while considering required efficiency measures.

Considering the vast range of alternative powertrains that are being developed today, the role of the fuel cell electric vehicle is coming into question. Is it a viable competitor to other zero emission alternatives such as battery electric vehicles, or will it fail to grab hold of the market?

To better understand this, AVL is developing proton-exchange membrane (PEM)- and solid oxide fuel cell-based systems for applications in passenger cars. With the demonstrator vehicle that AVL is developing together with a range of partners, the PEM fuel cell system will be integrated to demonstrate its range, stability and safety. In order to monitor the control strategy of the stack, experts are using AVL THDA as a unique tool.

The commercial vehicle sector is one of the most diverse automotive applications, but despite the diversity of mobility patterns, fleet managers have one common denominator: the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Current predictions for hydrogen fuel-cell trucks show the potential for a lower TCO compared to conventional and battery-electric powertrains in the mid-term. In addition, upcoming pollutant and CO2 emissions regulations will further drive demand for this technology in order to achieve sustainable and low-emissions transportation. As such, OEMs and suppliers are currently preparing production-ready fuel-cell solutions for this industry.

With the increasing move to hybrid and full electric vehicles, the underbody of the modern vehicle contains many sensitive and high voltage electrical components. Protecting these valuable components is critical from a safety and reliability perspective. The forces imposed on the underbody by hitting water at speed are significant. The task to predict those forces using traditional CFD methodologies is very expensive with long solve times, even with large compute clusters available. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is a meshless particle method based on Lagrangian formulation that is now being used for these applications. This method is being applied for solving problems in water management with complex flow configurations without using a pre-calculated mesh. Solve times are a fraction of traditional CFD. PreonLab is an SPH code with superior performance, allowing for full geometric complexity, and powerful post-processing and visualization capabilities. Join this AVL webinar to learn how PreonLab software is enabling OEM’s to accurately predict flow paths of water or oil, with the goal of improving the design and integration into the whole vehicle. Topics covered include simulation of:

  • Water ingress into the body structure through gaps and seals
  • Management of water run-off from body structure
